Oakley Creek with Gillian

Oakley Creek with Gillian

We had arranged to meet a couple of friends at Coxs Bay this morning for a kayak, but about an hour beforehand I got a text  message from Gillian complaining that it was raining.

Paremoremo Picnic

Paremoremo Picnic

The recent removal of all the pines at end of the road had turned the ramp to soft sticky clay when we launched our kayaks at Whenuapai this morning.

Waiheke Sculpture Walk

Waiheke Sculpture Walk

On a beautifully fine Waitangi day we took the ferry to Waiheke to see the sculpture exhibition. The walk around the cliffs is fantastic at any time, but there was lots of interesting art to loom at as well.

Puhoi River Paddle

We discovered where the masses go to paddle their kayaks when we took a trip upriver from Wenderholm.

Lake Ohakuri

Lake Ohakuri

When we looked at the weather map, the central North Island looked like the place to be over Anniversary weekend, so we’ve been exploring one of the hydro lakes on the Waikato river.

Tongue Point blunder

Tongue Point blunder

Our plan today was to kayak up the Matakana river. We left home soon after 10 AM, with a plan to stop by the farmer’s market to pick up some goodies for lunch, then launch around midday.

Thakhek and Konglor Cave

For our final adventure in Lao, we travelled six hours south of the capital to the town of Thakhek. Continue reading Thakhek and Konglor Cave

Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng

This town is a bit of a culture shock after the rural north of Lao. It is fairly swarming with tourists, although the number of half empty restaurants, bars and guest houses tell us that in past years it has been far busier.

Plain of Jars

Plain of Jars

For our final adventure in the northern Lao highlands, we based ourselves in the town of Phonsavan. The huge stone jars that we went to see are, according to local legend, left by a race of giants who used them to brew rice wine. Continue reading Plain of Jars

Viengxay Caves

Viengxay Caves

It took two days on a bus to get to Xam Neua in the far north-east of Lao, but it was worth it.

Nam Ha River

Nam Ha River

We’re back in civilization after two days kayaking through the Laotian jungle. When I first saw that the boats we would be using were the inflatable variety I was a bit disappointed, but it turned out that they were ideal. This time of year the water level is only just high enough to be navigable,  with quite a few rapids to negotiate. Continue reading Nam Ha River

Zip Line to Gibbon Experience

Zip Line to Gibbon Experience

We have spent the last three days deep in the Lao rainforest searching for gibbons. Getting there was so much fun I don’t care that we didn’t  find any, especially as we have already seen them in Thailand. Continue reading Zip Line to Gibbon Experience

We stayed overnight in this village on our way up the Mekong River. We are travelling on a slow boat for two days, so it is fortunate that I’m feeling healthy again.

Pak Ou Caves

Pak Ou Caves

I was woken about 4am this morning by the beating of the big drum at our local wat (temple). Presumably the monks have to chant or meditate for an hour or so before they start their procession through the town; I went back to sleep. Continue reading Pak Ou Caves

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang

After almost 12 hours flying, it was great to finally land in Bangkok and find our shuttle to the hotel. I was so tired that I couldn’t get it together to find the air conditioning controls, and as it was blowing  right on me I was cold all night. I slept pretty soundly nonetheless.
