The tide was out this morning, so we decided to walk up the Okura walkway. I run up to Dacres cottage quite often, so it made a nice change travelling at tramping pace.

Gulf Harbour clifftop
Today’s adventure started at the end of Shakespeare Rd, at the end of Whangaparoa Peninsular. We didn’t go into the park; instead we headed around the cliff to the south.

2012 Auckland Half Marathon
Felicity and I ran the Auckland Half Marathon yesterday. She pushed more aggressively towards the front before the start, but I passed her just after the 1km mark. My finish time was 2:19:10 and hers was 3:09:15, which I think rather impressive considering she did almost no training at all! Continue reading 2012 Auckland Half Marathon
Oruamo and Kaipatiki Creeks
By exerting our combined powers of positive thinking this morning, Felicity and I convinced ourselves it was summer and loaded up the kayaks.

Mangemangeroa Creek
We launched our kayaks at Cockle Bay this morning, and since there was still 3 hours till high tide we cruised up the coast to Howick beach before turning back and heading up river.

Waimahia Creek
When Felicity and I saw the blue sky and sunshine this morning, we both felt like going for a paddle. The east coast tides were still wrong, but the Manukau was full at 11.20, which was perfect.

Turanga and Mangemangeroa Valleys
The tide was out today, so we packed our hiking gear and set off soon after breakfast, intending to explore the track down the left bank of the Turanga creek in Whitford that we spotted when kayaking recently. Continue reading Turanga and Mangemangeroa Valleys
Moumoukai Valley mountain bike trails
With such a blue sky this morning I felt there was no better thing to do than ride my bike somewhere spectacular. I texted Kerry and he was thinking the same thing, so as soon as the traffic died down we headed south to the Hunua ranges.
Of all the mountain bike developments undertaken by the Auckland City Council, this is the one they got most right. Continue reading Moumoukai Valley mountain bike trails
Lynfield Cove to Wesley Bay
Seeing as how yesterday’s adventure mostly involved sitting on our bums, Felicity suggested we pack lunch and go for a walk somewhere. In contrast to yesterday, our fridge this morning had rich pickings in the form of leftover roast lamb, so this sounded like a fine idea to me. Continue reading Lynfield Cove to Wesley Bay
Turanga Creek Whitford
The tide was full about 1pm today, perfect for a trip up a river.
We loaded up and headed south to Whitford, but instead of launching where we had planned at Clifton Rd, we drove to the north down Broomfields Rd. This ramp actually leads down to Mangemangeroa Creek, and unfortunately had a chain across the top, but we were both keen enough to carry the kayaks down to the water’s edge.

Omaha cycleway
When I saw the blue sky this morning I decided I had to go for a long bike ride. Fortunately Kerry had the same idea, so by about 10AM we were on our way north, with a plan to ride at Tauwharanui.

Phang Nga Bay Thailand
On 20th of July, Felicity and I flew to Bangkok then on to Pukhet for a week’s kayaking.

Beachlands to Maraitai walkway
I had hoped to go kayaking today, but the tide was not favourable for our intention to explore up a river‚ so we decided to walk along the coast south of Beachlands instead.

Whakaipo Bay to Kinloch W2K
It took us a couple of attempts to find the start of this trail, but a couple of road cyclists at Acacia Bay put us on the right track. We were on our way by 10am, with the sun breaking through the mist and promising a warm day.

Whakamaru Dam south on Waikato River Trail
Tonight I’m staying in Mangakino with Kerry and our mountain bikes, with a plan to ride the W2K track at Taupo tomorrow.

Whau River and Wairau Creek
It started raining quite heavily as we left home this morning with our kayaks on the roof, and we wondered if we had made a bad choice of activity. The rain radar at the Met Service hadn’t shown much coming, but I have experienced showers in the past that didn’t officially exist.

Turanga Creek Track
On our way back towards the city, we decided to have a look down the end of Clifton Road to see if there was a suitable kayak launching site. We turned into Potts Rd and noticed a horse track heading downhill towards the banks of the creek, so we decided we had energy to explore further.

Pine Harbour and Motukaraka
Yesterday Felicity and I intended to explore the new walkway from Maraitai to Beachlands, but we got distracted along the way. We saw signs advertising a “Fresh Market” at Pine Harbour, and although we had passed the turn-off, we realised we would be able to walk down the cliff from the edge of Beachlands.

New trails at Totara Park
My sister Annie was heading back to Tasmania this morning, so I loaded my bike on the back of the car before taking her to the airport. I had originally thought of riding from Ambury Park, but found myself heading south to Manurewa to check out the new trails I have read about.

Auckland MTB Club ride the Royal Albany
When I drove in to the Massey car park this morning, I could see almost a dozen riders from the Auckland MTB Club preparing to set off at 9am. I wanted to stop and introduce myself, but I could see Al’s car and trailer driving up the track on the hill behind us, so I set off after him to see if he needed a hand unloading.
