There are a couple of kilometres of cycleway either side of Stern Valley hut, but it wasn’t long before we were back on a tramping-only route leading straight through the bush.

When it is finished (supposedly late 2015), the Old Ghost Road from Lyell to Seddonville will be one of New Zealand’s premier mountain bike rides. We decided to walk over it before it becomes infested with cyclists.

We spent Friday night at the Athenree camp ground, and enjoyed a soak in their attractive hot pool. A local artist has made a series of beautiful mosaic panels on the pool fence, depicting local bird life.

I caught the train out to Stratford at 10 o’clock this morning, which is the earliest I am allowed to take my bike. I arrived at a very modern Westfield shopping mall, and set about finding the greenway marked on the map.

Felicity had meetings organised for today, so I took my bike on the London Overground train as far north as I could get on my Oyster Card, which was Watford High St. As soon as I came out of the station I saw a National Cycleway sign pointing north to St Albans, a bit over seven miles away.
